Bilingual Exhibit at the Collingwood Museum Explores Sign Languages Across Canada

Sharing is SO MUCH APPRECIATED!

Collingwood, ON [13 March 2025] Do you know how many distinct sign languages are in use across Canada?

The Collingwood Museum invites you to discover Sign Languages of Canada, a travelling exhibit from the Canadian Language Museum, on display from March 18 to April 25.

This engaging bilingual exhibit explores six distinct sign languages used across Canada: American Sign Language (ASL), Langue des signes quΓ©bΓ©coise (LSQ), Maritime Sign Language, Inuit Sign Language, Oneida Sign Language, and Plains Indigenous Sign Language. Explore the rich history, cultural significance, and evolving status of these languages, including their unique features and the communities that use them. Through maps, video, and illustrations, you will gain insight into the fascinating histories and distinctive features that make each of these sign languages unique.

The Collingwood Museum will be open for extended hours of operation on Monday, March 31, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. in honour of Indigenous Languages Day. On this day, we gather as Canadians to reflect on the importance of Indigenous languages and recognize the ongoing efforts of Indigenous communities to reclaim, revitalize, and preserve their languages. The Sign Languages of Canada exhibit invites visitors to celebrate the linguistic diversity of Canada and includes three Indigenous sign languages.

The Collingwood Museum is located at 45 St. Paul Street and is open for regular hours of operation, Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is by a suggested donation of $5.00 per person.
