Collingwood Celebrates Poetry Month with Tribute to Outgoing Poet Laureate Jillian Morris and a Call for Future Poets

    Sharing is SO MUCH APPRECIATED!

Collingwood, ON [25 March 2025] – April is almost here, and with it comes the celebration of Poetry Month, an annual observance that shines a light on the transformative power of poetry.

This Poetry Month, the Town of Collingwood extends its heartfelt appreciation to Jillian Morris, our dedicated Poet Laureate, who has inspired and uplifted us throughout her term. As Jillian prepares to conclude her tenure at the end of April, we celebrate her remarkable contributions, her passion for poetry, and her commitment to enriching Collingwood’s cultural fabric.

“It’s time to pass on the inkwell,” said Jillian Morris. “I am overcome with gratitude for the community connection and true reciprocity that the role of Poet Laureate fosters. What a privilege it’s been to see this remarkable community from this perspective. I have new friends, new artistic connections, and a new appreciation as I enter a new chapter. Thank you, Collingwood, for the trust placed in me, I hope I did good by all who call this place home. I am excited to witness the pros(e) of our next Poet Laureate. A final thought, cadence matters, don’t forget to pause for effect.”

Jillian recently released her first book, “born, genes and quash” a compilation of poetry created while Poet Laureate, sharing with readers the richness of storytelling and the ability of poetry to inspire action, challenge perspective and evoke emotion. Take a stroll along the Train Trail, beginning at the Collingwood Museum and explore selected poems from “born, genes and quash” featured along the trail as part of our spring StoryWalk©.

As we bid farewell to Jillian, the Town of Collingwood invites poets from across the region to consider applying to become our next Poet Laureate. This is a chance to carry forward the legacy of enriching our community through poetry, fostering creativity, and celebrating the power of words.

The call for Collingwood’s next Poet Laureate closes on Monday, April 14th.

    Enjoy Poetry Month, Collingwood!
