(SPRINGWATER TOWNSHIP, CLEARVIEW TOWNSHIP, ON) – The Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists that driving on a closed highway is illegal and dangerous. Highway closures are implemented for public safety during severe weather, collisions, or emergency operations.
OPP SAVE (Snowmobile, ATV, Vessel Enforcement) is en-route to assist stranded motorists using snowmobiles, along with a Huronia West and Collingwood officers already on scene. Due to severe weather across the region, tow response is extremely delayed, and motorists should expect a lengthy wait for assistance.
Consequences of Ignoring Highway Closures:
• Driving past closure signs or barriers can result in charges under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA):
o Disobeying a highway closure constitutes driving on a closed highway; HTA s. 134(3)
o A fine of $110 and three demerit points may apply.
• Insurance Impact: Claims may be denied if an incident occurs while driving on a closed highway.
• Court Appearance: In some cases, drivers may be required to attend court.
Highway closures protect motorists and allow emergency crews to work safely. Entering a closed highway puts lives at risk and delays reopening efforts.
