(COLLINGWOOD, ON) – Members of the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a 50-year-old Collingwood man with impaired operation following a single-vehicle collision involving an electric bicycle.

On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at approximately 9:07 p.m., officers responded to a collision on Findlay Drive in the Town of Collingwood, where an electric bicycle had struck a tree. EMS attended and transported the male to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers conducted an impaired driving investigation, and the male was subsequently arrested. The male provided breath samples of 180 mg and 170 mg of alcohol per 100 mL of blood-more than twice the legal limit.

As a result of the investigation, the male has been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol, section 320.14(1)(a)
  • Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus), section 320.14(1)(b)

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood on August 19, 2025. His driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days.

The OPP reminds the public that electric bicycles are considered motor vehicles under the Criminal Code of Canada. Operating any motorized vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs is a criminal offence and poses serious risks to the operator and the public.
