SFO LAUNCHES NEW ONLINE PORTAL AND WEBSITE TO BETTER SUPPORT VICTIMS OF SERIOUS FRAUD OFFICE INVESTIGATIONS

0

(TORONTO, ON) – This week the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has launched a new Victim Portal and website. The Portal is a secure and user-friendly online platform designed to enhance communication and support for victims impacted by SFO-investigated fraud.

The Portal streamlines the SFO efforts in providing accessible, effective and confidential resources for those impacted by fraud. Individuals who are a victim of fraud that is under SFO investigation will be invited by a victim liaison to access the Portal.

The SFO recognizes the impact that fraud has on individuals and is committed to ensuring they receive a high standard of support according to the principles of the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights.

To align with their commitment, the Portal offers victims a streamlined way to access critical information, communicate directly with victim liaisons, stay informed about the status of their cases and receive information about their rights and the resources available to them. It also allows for victim liaisons to efficiently communicate important updates about on-going cases to many victims simultaneously.

The Portal was developed through a collaborative effort with victim liaisons, fraud investigators, Crown prosecutors and technology experts to ensure that the platform meets the unique needs of those impacted by fraud.

In addition to the Portal, general members of the public can view the new SFO website that offers valuable resources about fraud, how to report fraud, victims’ rights and the criminal justice system. To access the new informative website visit sfo.opp.ca.

Both the Victim Portal and the website have been designed to be mobile-friendly, to ensure information can be accessed whenever and wherever needed.

QUOTES:

“This new portal will provide seamless support and protection to victims of crime as they rebuild their lives and regain their confidence and security. By streamlining resource sharing, case updates and other communications between police and victims, we’re putting those who have been harmed first while ensuring criminals are held accountable.”

– Solicitor General Michael Kerzner

“Incidents of fraud continue to rise and can affect anyone. Our government is committed to combatting serious crime and protecting the people of Ontario. Ontario’s Serious Fraud Office is a leader in this fight and their new website and victim portal will not only help ensure victims know how to recognize and report serious fraud but it will also support the timely and efficient prosecution of large-scale and complex fraud cases.”

– Attorney General Doug Downey

“As fraud continues to present a significant risk to our community, we are introducing new innovations to better serve those who have been victimized. Together with our partners at the Ministry of the Attorney General, the Ontario Provincial Police is pleased to introduce an online Victim Portal and dedicated SFO website that will make it easier for victims of serious fraud investigations to stay up to date with their case progress and to find helpful resources.”

Car culture is driving us to disaster

0

By David Suzuki

The climate crisis is too big to be remedied by individual actions alone. It requires government policies and regulations and international cooperation in everything from research to global agreements. One critical area where individual acts (including public advocacy) combined with government policy can make a big difference is transportation.

Car culture has fuelled the climate crisis from the beginning. In the early days, large cars weren’t built just for luxury and big families; they were built to burn as much energy-dense oil as possible, fuelling a massively profitable, mutually beneficial alliance between Big Oil and the auto industry. An entire way of life was built around it, in the United States and Canada especially — with motels, drive-ins, suburbs and strip malls.

Now, despite advances in electric and hybrid vehicles, tailpipe standards, better transit in some areas and more, emissions continue to rise, thanks largely to a boom in light truck and SUV sales. To keep the oil economy going, relentless advertising portrays trucks and SUVS as offering freedom, adventure and safety.

According to a recent David Suzuki Foundation report, light-duty trucks (including SUVs and minivans) are one of the fastest-growing sources of emissions in Canada’s transport sector. Although emissions from cars went down by 47 per cent from 1990 to 2022, light duty truck emissions rose by 112 per cent. As of 2020, about 62 per cent of the light-duty vehicles on Canada’s roads were trucks, compared to 27 per cent in 1990.

The report found vehicle upsizing has wiped out 39 per cent of fuel consumption reductions Canada would have seen from increased zero-emissions vehicle sales and fuel economy improvements.

As the study points out, the trend is global: “the proportion of SUVs has grown from 22 per cent of light-duty vehicle sales in 2005 to over 50 per cent in 2022.” The average weight of vehicles has also increased. Between 2010 and 2022, SUVs represented the second-fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions globally, after the power sector — higher than heavy industry, heavy-duty trucks and aviation.

According to the International Energy Agency, global SUV oil consumption rose by 500,000 barrels a day from 2021 to 2022, “accounting for one-third of the total growth in oil demand.”

SUVs are also less safe than smaller cars. Pedestrians, cyclists and people in smaller cars, especially, are far more likely to be injured or killed when struck by or in a collision with the heavier vehicle.

It’s clear that individual choices in transportation — resisting the onslaught of consumerist propaganda — can help in the necessary transition to less-polluting, more climate-friendly ways of living. Getting away from unnecessary SUVs and light-duty trucks is a start. But simply buying smaller cars, or hybrid or electric vehicles, won’t solve the problem. That’s where governments come in.

If we’re to move away from the absurd notion that every person needs a tonne or two of metal, plastic, fabric, electronics and other materials to move around — worse when it’s inefficiently burning fossil fuels — we need efficient, alternative ways to move.

Public transit is critical, along with good infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists and people with mobility challenges. As we move toward these solutions, even those who need to drive, including emergency vehicle and taxi operators, will spend less time in gridlocked traffic, breathing less pollution. And considering the costs of a car and its depreciation, maintenance, insurance, parking, fuel and more, not having one can save a lot of money! Reducing car dependency also makes communities much safer.

Growing technology may also help. Autonomous or self-driving vehicles could make more efficient use of cars for modes like taxi and ride-share services. And better urban planning can create more walkable communities, connected with good public transit.

There’s a real danger that some of the progress made on things like vehicle-emissions standards, alternative transportation infrastructure, public transit, congestion pricing and electric vehicle quotas could be overturned by electoral outcomes.

At the very least, we can all resist the corporate-consumerist push by Big Oil and Auto to keep us boxed into inefficient machines choking on fumes from gas-guzzling SUVs and trucks while we sit in gridlocked traffic. What’s really needed, though, is to replace wasteful car culture altogether with the many safer, healthier, more cost-effective alternatives.

County Councillors approve next step in process to adjust the size of County Council

0

Midhurst/January 14, 2025 – County Council today revisited a previous decision regarding the size and composition of County Council. A motion was approved to support adjusting the size of County Council from 32 members to 17 (inclusive of a full-time, appointed Warden).

If approved, the elected Mayors of the County’s 16 member municipalities will serve as the default County representatives starting the next term of County Council. Currently, and historically, local Deputy Mayors also sit on County Council. As proposed previously, the full-time appointed Warden will be chosen by the incoming Council among eligible electors who choose to put their name forward for Warden.

To take effect, these decisions must be approved through a triple majority process (as outlined below). If approved, these decisions would take effect for the 2026-2030 term.  The current structure will continue for the remainder of the current term.

“Our long-standing structure, with our Mayors and Deputy Mayors both serving on County Council, has served our communities well,” said Warden Basil Clarke. “However, we recognize that our Council is large in size, and that it’s prudent to make this change going forward. With advancements in technology, we have more ways to connect as a Council, with staff and residents, making this potential change more possible than it was years ago. If approved, I’m confident that we will continue to see efficient, effective and fair representation and decision making at County Council. I’m also pleased Council maintained our decision to pursue a full-time, appointed Warden starting next term. The position of Warden requires full-time attention to Simcoe County residents and business.”

Triple Majority Approval
Approval by County Council to proceed with these changes is the first step in the legislative process. The next step is a requirement to hold a public meeting to consider a draft by-law that would change the composition of County Council. If the by-law is ultimately passed by County Council, it would then be sent to the 16 lower-tier member municipalities where a majority of their Councils must consent to the by-law (the majority of municipalities consenting must also represent a majority of electors in the County).

It is important to note that County Council may address further guidelines for the role of Deputy Warden at future meetings and review more information regarding committee structure and the process for Council alternates. Representatives from the County’s two separated cities will continue to sit on the Human Services Business Section of Committee of the Whole.

The County of Simcoe is composed of sixteen member municipalities and provides crucial public services to County residents in addition to providing paramedic and social services to the separated cities of Barrie and Orillia. Visit our website at simcoe.ca
