Industries in denial: From burning cigarettes to a burning planet

0

By David Suzuki

Not long ago, smoking was promoted as healthy — even glamourous. Cigarette companies used doctors and movie and TV stars to sell their products.

People smoked everywhere — in bars, restaurants, theatres, workplaces, airplanes, buses and taxis, even hospitals and school buildings. It’s hard to imagine anyone ever thought inhaling hot smoke and burned plant particles into your lungs was a good idea, let alone a healthy one. But there was lots of money to be made!

As lung cancer rates started spiking in the 1940s and ’50s, concerns about the link to smoking sparked new research and a push to limit tobacco consumption. But, in an economic system that puts profit above everything, even human health and life, truth is often treated more as an inconvenience than something to be heeded. The tobacco companies paid their own researchers and media supporters to convince people that smoking isn’t harmful and that people have the “right” to smoke.

As evidence about smoking’s harms became undeniable, governments started implementing restrictions and advertising bans. The backlash was massive, well-funded and coordinated, and included many of the same voices that later downplayed or denied the evidence for global warming as a consequence of burning coal, oil and gas.

Many of us remember the unpleasant experience of trying to enjoy a meal next to a table of smokers. Now, far fewer people smoke. And most have accepted that smoking is bad for the health of smokers and those around them, and that there should be limits on where and when people can partake. We’ve also accepted — to some extent — that advertising a product that can seriously damage health and even kill should be restricted or banned.

But we live under a consumer capitalist system, so we’re still subjected to ads — some false or misleading — for harmful products. Cars, trucks and SUVs and the gas they burn are polluting air, water and land and fuelling a climate crisis that puts our survival at risk. Yet their ads are ubiquitous.

As Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway wrote in Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming, tobacco interests and later fossil fuel promoters hired scientists, including Frederick Seitz and Fred Singer, to cast doubt on the mounting evidence of the harms of tobacco and then climate change.

Many of the same media people were also enlisted in both battles. In Canada, Postmedia/National Post columnist Terence Corcoran has long been a vocal critic of tobacco and climate science. His employer made its support for polluting fossil fuels explicit in 2013, when it signed an agreement with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.

“We will work with CAPP to amplify our energy mandate and to be a part of the solution to keep Canada competitive in the global marketplace,” then-publisher Douglas Kelly said. “The National Post will undertake to leverage all means editorially, technically and creatively to further this critical conversation.”

Restricting and discouraging tobacco use and banning advertising was far easier than tackling climate-altering fossil fuel use. The former was an economic driver, but it wasn’t fuelling the global economy, as are gas, oil and coal. And smoking is entirely unnecessary, whereas fuels have become an essential part of our lives. But fossil fuels are also a far greater danger to all of humanity than tobacco. And there are many safer, cleaner and more cost-effective alternatives.

In light of new evidence that the world will soon heat beyond levels scientists say can’t be exceeded without serious consequences, United Nations secretary general António Guterres has called for global restrictions on the “godfathers of climate chaos — the fossil-fuel industry.”

“Many governments restrict or prohibit advertising for products that harm human health, like tobacco,” he said in a recent speech. “I urge every country to ban advertising from fossil-fuel companies. And I urge news media and tech companies to stop taking fossil-fuel advertising.”

Calls for fossil fuel ad bans in Canada are growing, with politicians and organizations such as the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment backing them — and the usual suspects using specious arguments against them.

We must stop promoting products that put us all at risk. But more than that, we must reform the systems that encourage this suicidal mindset.

GRAHAM TRUDE

Graham Trude is a Canadian Country musician, performer and songwriter with a characteristically big voice and an even bigger heart. An introspective singer with a confessional style of writing, Graham draws on his life experiences, weaving tales of love and loss into memorable melodies that have earned him admiration in both the independent rock world and modern country circles.

Dubbed “The Singing Soldier” by Canadian country music legend Bruce Good (of The Good Brothers), Graham is a unique songwriter and performer who brings an unforgettable presence to the stage, regardless of whether he is performing in a packed theatre or an intimate coffee shop. With a sound and style borne out of a mix of country, rock and pop honed through years of writing, there is an honesty to his music that is very authentic and relatable. His ability to connect with every listener has seen Graham build an ever-growing fan base of loyal followers who have found solace and release in his melodies and his lyrics.

With a strong military and law enforcement background, Graham is able to write from a place of empathy and understanding when it comes to stories about love, loss and the connection of emotion. Graham served as a front line armoured corps tank driver in the Afghanistan rotation 3-09 with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (RC) B Platoon. Upon his return home to Canada, he was determined to continue his work on the front lines – this time as a police officer in the remote fly in indigenous communities of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, Poplar Hill, Ontario.

As a result of a military injury and a law enforcement incident, Graham was diagnosed with complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in 2019. At the lowest point in his life, he turned to writing music to find solace and eventually found the strength to take his future into his own hands and turn his life around. Graham departed from law enforcement in 2020 to pursue his love and career in song writing and performing.

Graham’s music has been well-received by both his fans and experienced critics. In 2013, he placed top 3 in a provincial song writing competition and was chosen to write and perform the theme song for a Canadian-based television series The Real Canadian Joes. In review of his single “PTSD”, The Rider News blog said “this soulful, gentle giant who possesses that rare combination of extreme vulnerability and playful bravado, delivers his message loud and clear”. Graham’s first two single releases of 2022, “PTSD” and “My Old Town” were released to radio in Canada and have both reached success as top downloaded tracks on Yangaroo DMDS Country.

His most recent release, a stunning and sombre acoustic version of his track “PTSD” was released on Remembrance Day, and received international feedback and acclaim from fans, first responders, and military veterans all over the world.

Graham’s music draws from a number of genres and inspirations, with a modern rock and country culture heavily influencing his song writing, and he has several exciting new releases planned for 2023 and beyond. Additionally, he intends to use his voice to continue to advocate for those who carry psychological scars in their daily lives. With a promising career ahead, “The Singing Soldier” strives towards a future where all suffering feel seen, heard and understood and receive the care and support that they deserve.

“The main goal with my music is to help people, I believe life is about people helping people and giving back”.

4K Travel Video | Unesco World Heritage Sites: Preserving Global Treasures

0

UNESCO World Heritage Sites are places of significant cultural or natural importance, considered to be of outstanding value to humanity.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) created the World Heritage program in 1972 with the aim of identifying, protecting, and preserving these sites around the globe. As of today, there are over 1,100 World Heritage Sites in more than 160 countries, encompassing a diverse range of landmarks, including ancient ruins, architectural marvels, and pristine natural reserves.

Cultural Heritage Sites often include landmarks like the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, the Historic Centre of Rome in Italy, and the Great Wall of China. These sites are typically recognized for their historical significance, architectural elegance, and cultural value. They provide a window into humanity’s past, showcasing the achievements of previous civilizations and serving as a vital link to our shared history.

Natural Heritage Sites, on the other hand, are places of extraordinary natural beauty and ecological importance. Examples include the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador, known for their unique biodiversity and role in Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, and Yellowstone National Park in the United States, which features diverse ecosystems, geothermal wonders, and breathtaking landscapes. These sites are essential for the conservation of biodiversity and the promotion of sustainable tourism practices.

In addition to their cultural and natural significance, UNESCO World Heritage Sites also drive tourism and economic development in their respective regions. The recognition of a site as a World Heritage Site often brings increased international attention, funding for preservation efforts, and a boost in tourism. This helps in generating income for local communities and raising awareness about the importance of protecting our global heritage. Ultimately, UNESCO World Heritage Sites serve as a testament to the beauty, ingenuity, and diversity of our planet, providing inspiration and education for generations to come.
