EXTENDED ROADWAY CLOSURES EXPECTED DUE TO SEVERE WEATHER

0

Safety Tips for Affected Motorists

(SPRINGWATER TOWNSHIP, CLEARVIEW TOWNSHIP, WASAGA BEACH, ON) – Due to ongoing severe winter weather, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is advising motorists that multiple roadways in Springwater, Clearview, and Wasaga Beach remain closed, with the potential for additional closures to occur as the weather system continues to move through the region.

The OPP is asking members of the public to avoid unnecessary travel, use alternate routes, and remain off closed roadways.

If you are currently stuck on a roadway, please follow these important safety tips:

  • Stay in your vehicle. Leaving your vehicle can be dangerous in winter conditions for a variety of reasons. Stay inside where you can remain warm and visible.
  • Keep your exhaust clear. If you run your engine for heat, ensure the tailpipe is clear of snow and ice to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Run your engine periodically for warmth, not continuously. Turn off unnecessary electronics to save your battery.
  • Use blankets, extra clothing and layers to remain warm. Keep emergency supplies accessible.
  • Turn on hazard lights when running your engine. If safe, tie a bright cloth to your antenna or door handle.
  • Follow OPP social media channels, 511 Ontario, and local radio for accurate information.
  • Call 911 only for emergencies. If you or someone in your vehicle is in distress (medical emergency, out of fuel, etc.), call 911.
  • Follow the direction of police and emergency services personnel.

Motorists are also reminded to always carry an emergency kit during winter travel, including blankets, food, water, a flashlight and a charged phone. Make sure you have a full tank of gas before departing, particularly during inclement weather.

The OPP recognizes that extended highway closures can be challenging and frustrating. OPP officers and emergency crews are actively working to address the situation and reopen impacted roadways as quickly and safely as possible. These efforts often require careful coordination under difficult conditions and can take time. Public safety is always the OPP’s top priority, and your cooperation and understanding helps ensure the closure is resolved safety and efficiently.

DRIVING ON A CLOSED HIGHWAY: SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES

0

(SPRINGWATER TOWNSHIP, CLEARVIEW TOWNSHIP, ON) – The Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists that driving on a closed highway is illegal and dangerous. Highway closures are implemented for public safety during severe weather, collisions, or emergency operations.

OPP SAVE (Snowmobile, ATV, Vessel Enforcement) is en-route to assist stranded motorists using snowmobiles, along with a Huronia West and Collingwood officers already on scene. Due to severe weather across the region, tow response is extremely delayed, and motorists should expect a lengthy wait for assistance.

Consequences of Ignoring Highway Closures:

• Driving past closure signs or barriers can result in charges under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA):

o Disobeying a highway closure constitutes driving on a closed highway; HTA s. 134(3)

o A fine of $110 and three demerit points may apply.

• Insurance Impact: Claims may be denied if an incident occurs while driving on a closed highway.

• Court Appearance: In some cases, drivers may be required to attend court.

Highway closures protect motorists and allow emergency crews to work safely. Entering a closed highway puts lives at risk and delays reopening efforts.

Call 911 only for emergencies or situations where your safety is immediately at risk.

Do NOT call 911 for tow updates or road condition inquiries. For road status and closures, visit 511on.ca.

0

Midhurst/December 30, 2025 – The severe winter weather experienced across our region has impacted a number of the County’s services.

Road Maintenance Operations

All County of Simcoe plows are currently active and working to maintain road conditions across the region. Drivers may experience slower clearing in areas where visibility is reduced, but crews are continuing operations as safely and efficiently as possible.

The following County Roads are currently closed:

  • County Road 10 from Highway 26 to County Road 9
  • County Road 92 from Elmvale to Wasaga
  • County Road 29 from County Road 22 to Concession 4 in Tiny

Social and Community Services

  • To maximize options for warm, indoor locations, all County of Simcoe Social and Community Services offices located in Alliston, Barrie, Bradford, Collingwood, Orillia, and Midland are open each weekday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for individuals seeking shelter from the cold. Please note that both Alliston and Bradford do close from 12 to 1 p.m. daily.
  • Warming Centres are open across our region. Visit https://simcoe.ca/winterwarming/ for locations.

County of Simcoe Paramedic Services

  • Heavy weather across parts of our region is slowing paramedic response times. Crews are prioritizing life‑threatening emergencies, meaning lower‑priority calls may take longer than usual. Some areas not directly hit by the storm may still see delays as teams are redirected to support harder‑hit communities. Thank you for your patience as paramedics work to reach every call as safely and quickly as conditions allow.

LINX Transit

  • Snowfall and poor visibility are impacting travel today. Some roads remain untreated, and delays of up to 25 minutes are occurring on multiple lines.
  • Please note, service on Routes 1 and 2 has been impacted. For the latest updates, visit: https://nextlinx.simcoe.ca/
  • Safety remains the priority at LINX Transit. Operators are reducing speed and adjusting operations to match road conditions. Service adjustments, including delays or suspensions, will occur where required to protect passenger and operator safety.

Curbside Waste Collection

  • Residents are advised that if your collection is missed, please leave carts curbside, ensuring they are clear of snow, for a return later this week.
  • Additional updates will be shared through the Simcoe County Collects app.

We will continue to update return plans as information becomes available. Please note that additional collections may occur on Saturday, January 2, due to the New Year’s Day statutory holiday.
