New Councillor Appointed to Collingwood Council

    Sharing is SO MUCH APPRECIATED!

Collingwood, ON [20 March 2025] – Collingwood Council appoints Ian MacCulloch as the newest member of Council during the Special meeting held Thursday, March 20, 2025, filling the vacant Councillor seat for the remainder of the 2022-2026 Council Term. Interested candidates were invited to submit their interest by March 12th, 2025.

The Town is very pleased with the community’s interest. It received 27 applications by the deadline, with five applicants withdrawing their applications prior to Council consideration.

Ian MacCulloch stated in his Expression of interest “I would represent Collingwood residents with integrity and a forward-thinking approach. With a commitment to well-reasoned decision-making and a fact-based perspective. I believe that Council serves the Town best with listening, understanding, and acting in the best interests of residents. Our Town is growing and evolving, and I am passionate about helping shape its future.” His Personal Statement of Qualification and Interest can be viewed here: https://www.collingwood.ca/council/elections.

Each candidate was provided up to five (5) minutes to address Council during the Special Council meeting prior to Council making their decision. Council unanimously approved the appointment by-law, and the Clerk administered the Oath of Office and Declaration of Acknowledgement and Acceptance of the Council Code of Conduct as affirmed by the new Council member.

“We are pleased to conduct a fair and transparent process for Council’s selection of our new Councillor, including providing the public an opportunity to observe the proceedings. It is wonderful to have received so many expressions of interest from qualified and passionate individuals in our community,” says Clerk, Sara Almas. “We trust this energy will continue as we ramp up for the Municipal Election next year.”

    Background

This vacancy was created due to the resignation of a Councillor for the Town of Collingwood. At the January 27, 2025, Council meeting, Council declared one (1) Councillor position vacant as required by the Municipal Act, 2001. Further to Staff Report C2025-03, considered by Council at its regular meetings held on February 10 and February 24, 2025, Council opted to proceed with the option to fill the vacancy by inviting applications from interested qualified electors and further approved the procedure contained within the staff report on how the candidates will be interviewed and successful candidate appointed.
