OPP SNOWMOBILES ASSISTING STRANDED MOTORISTS DURING SEVERE WEATHER

Sharing is SO MUCH APPRECIATED!

(ORILLIA, ON) – Due to ongoing severe winter weather moving across the region, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding the public that officers are continuing to respond to emergencies and assist stranded motorists. With heavy snow and poor road conditions impacting travel, OPP snowmobiles have been deployed to reach areas inaccessible to traditional patrol vehicles.

Snowmobile units are currently supporting efforts, day and night, to ensure driver safety, provide transportation where needed, and deliver critical assistance in remote or hard-to-reach locations.

Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, monitor weather updates, and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies.

Safety Tips for Motorists:

  • Stay in your vehicle if stranded. Leaving your vehicle can be dangerous in winter conditions.
  • Keep your exhaust clear of snow and ice to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Run your engine periodically for warmth, not continuously, and conserve battery power.
  • Use blankets and extra clothing to stay warm. Keep emergency supplies accessible.
  • Turn on hazard lights when running your engine and, if safe, tie a bright cloth to your antenna or door handle.
  • Call 911 only for emergencies (when your safety is at risk).

Penalties for Ignoring Road Closures:

Accessing closed roads is dangerous and illegal. Motorists who drive past road closure signs or barricades may face fines under the Highway Traffic Act. These measures are in place to protect public safety and emergency responders.

Before heading out, check 511on.ca for provincial road conditions and consult municipal511.ca for local updates.

The OPP thanks the public for their patience and cooperation as officers work hard to keep communities safe during this severe weather event.
