Don’t miss out on this opportunity to experience the blues like never before!

Doors: 6:45 show 7:30

Founded by and featuring key members of the ever-popular Downchild Blues Band!

It all began at a Toronto Blues Society meeting following the 1998 Maple Blues Awards. Gary Kendall, band leader, told all present that the music that accompanied the award presentations should be better. The come back was “Let’s see what you can do”. It must be working because the band has been the centre piece of the Maple Blues Awards ever since.

At inception twenty-four years ago, Kendall knew the ball was in his hands and that he had to make it good; really good. He wanted a big band that could play all the blues styles, Delta Blues, Southside Chicago Blues, New Orleans Funk, Uptown Blues, Zydeco, Blues Rock and most of all Canadian Blues. Over the years the musicians that have contributed to making this dream possible all rose to the occasion lending their talent, support and high level of musicianship.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Gary Kendall also recognized an opportunity for the composition of original instrumental music as one of the perks that fell in line with the admiral position of accompanying the best singers and musicians performing in the Canadian Blues community. The songwriting helped The Maple Blues Band create a personal and unique sound, which they refer to as ‘Big Band Blues’. In the summer of 2022, twelve tracks were recorded which resulted in their Cordova Bay Records release LET’S GO. A truly group effort, with song writing credits spread over 24 years, including past and present band members.

Navigating September: How to Set Meaningful Goals for the New Season

We all feel it – the subtle shift that comes with September.

The kids are back in school, the air has a crispness to it, summer’s social calendar is winding down, and routine is starting to creep back in.

September often brings a sense of change, which can be exciting to embrace. Many people use this time to set new goals or adopt fresh habits. While having goals is fantastic for direction and a sense of achievement, it can also present challenges.

Take a moment to reflect on how you want to feel this season. Let your answer guide you in setting one or two goals or actions that align with that feeling, and identify one or two habits you want to reduce to achieve it. For instance, this season, I aim to feel more rested. To achieve this, my goal is to have a consistent bedtime and wake time which supports my natural circadian rhythm, and a better quality sleep. I’m also incorporating a morning walk in the fresh air to boost my energy levels. On the other side of things, the habit I want to reduce is mindlessly scrolling through my phone on social media before bed. By setting manageable goals and adjusting my habits, I’m paving the way to achieve the restful, energized feeling I’m striving for.

Here are some feelings that might resonate with you, or you might be thinking you want to strive for this time of year:

  • Feeling stronger
  • More balanced
  • Gaining clarity
  • Experiencing less stress
  • Having more energy

The list could go on, but the key is to focus on how YOU want to feel and ensure that your steps toward that goal are sustainable and manageable. Another effective strategy for this time of year is to seek accountability. Whether through a friend, a family member, or a professional practitioner, having someone to support you can make a significant difference, especially if you need extra guidance or therapeutic approaches to achieve your desired outcome.

If you’re looking to make a positive change and feel differently this season, now is the perfect time to start. I offer 15 minute complimentary phone calls to answer any questions about naturopathic medicine you may have, and how I can help you.

Let’s explore why previous health goals might not have been met and how we can overcome those challenges this time around. I’m eager to hear about your goals and am passionate about supporting you and our community.  Let’s work together to make this season transformative!

Collingwood Affordable Housing Seed Funding Opportunity – Applications now open for new and existing housing organizations

0

Collingwood, ON [06 September 2024] – In June 2024, the Town of Collingwood announced a brand-new seed funding opportunity to help increase the supply of affordable housing. New or existing housing organizations are now invited to apply to receive up to $25,000!

Affordable housing has been identified as a key priority for Council and staff, as well as the Affordable Housing Task Force (AHTF). With their support and the leadership from consultants N. Barry Lyon Consultants (NBLC) Ltd., the Affordable Housing Master Plan (AHMP), was developed and endorsed by Council in November 2023.

The Town of Collingwood is facing a deficit of more than 1,300 affordable units to meet the existing housing needs in our community. Moderate income households are currently priced out of both the ownership and rental housing market, and the limited rental options drive up prices, creating a constrained market with few options available.

Addressing the housing crisis and making sure there is enough affordable rental and ownership housing requires action and collaboration across the housing sector, including all levels of government, non-profit organizations, and private industry.

About the Seed Funding Opportunity

The objective of this funding opportunity is to increase affordable housing supply in Collingwood by offering seed funds to a non-profit or not-for-profit that can develop, own, and operate affordable housing in the community.

In June of 2024, the Town released a Request for Expression of Interest to solicit submissions from proposed new or existing community organizations that may be interested in this seed funding and to identify their needs/challenges/preferences, which ultimately assisted the Town and the AHTF in developing a set of recommended criteria for the seed funding that will set the receiving organization(s) up for success in the context of the objectives set out in the Affordable Housing Master Plan.

The Town and the AHTF have since developed parameters around the seed funding, including criteria for the allocation of the funds, submission requirements, an application and evaluation process.

Who can apply for Seed Funding

A new or existing non-profit or not-for-profit organization, or multiple organizations working in partnership, that can receive lands or units from donors, build new or renovate existing structures to create affordable housing, and/or take advantage of future financial incentives from all levels of government or via social financing, could potentially create opportunities for the development of affordable housing by and for the community using this seed funding.

How to apply for Seed Funding

Please review the Seed Funding Application and apply by 4:30 p.m. Friday, October 4th, To learn more about the application and Seed Funding opportunity, please contact Housing Development Coordinator, Claire de Souza at [email protected] or 705-445-1030 ext. 3242

This Seed Funding opportunity is just one of the ways Council is fulfilling the Town’s current role in addressing the affordable housing shortage in Collingwood. To learn more about the Town’s role and other Town initiated affordable housing initiatives please visit: https://www.collingwood.ca/affordablehousing

Want to talk with Council and staff in-person about affordable housing, this Seed Funding Opportunity and the relaunch of the Rapid Additional Residential Unit (ARU) Initiative 2.0.? Come visit the Town booth the Collingwood Downtown Farmer’s Market on Saturday, September 14th from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

A New Course: Supporting Our Children with Anxiety | Wendy Hunter, RP

0

The prevalence of anxiety in our children and teens is alarming and needs our attention.

The Children’s Mental Health Ontario (CMHO) has reported data showing that about 20% of Canadian children experience diagnosable mental health disorders, with anxiety being one of the most prevalent.

Additionally, CMHO highlights long wait times for accessing mental health services, with over 28,000 children on waitlists for care.

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) research and surveys have highlighted that
approximately 39% of high school students in Ontario report moderate to severe psychological distress, including anxiety and depression.

Of these, 17% report severe levels of distress. This suggests that a substantial portion of young people are grappling with mental health challenges that can impact their
academic performance, social interactions, and overall quality of life.

child.parent.learning.pic

Post-COVID data from Statistics Canada has shown that 70% of parents believe the pandemic worsened their children’s mental health, with anxiety being a major concern. This data is part of broader national surveys on the mental health impact of the pandemic on children. Factors such as social isolation, disruptions in routine, and fear of illness have contributed to increased anxiety levels in children and teens.

In my private practice, a significant amount of my work entails teaching children and teenagers
about anxiety: where anxiety comes from, how it works within their bodies and ways to manage
anxiety so they are more resilient and empowered. I also work closely with their parents so that
they can support their children with knowledge, tools and support.

In order to address this significant issue for children and teenagers, this fall I will be
teaching a comprehensive parenting course called Fear-Less, which is created by Triple P
Parenting from Australia.

Is this course for your family?

Your child (age 6-14) has anxiety that is affecting their everyday life. It may stop them, or your
whole family, from doing certain activities. Your child may be worried a lot of the time. You
may swing between reassuring them and telling them to face their fears. Neither of these seems
to work and their anxiety seems to increase. You may feel like you’ve tried everything, and
possibly may be anxious yourself. If parenting a child with anxiety is affecting your life and
you’d like to help your child worry less and be more confident, continue to read.

What is Fear-Less?

This evidence based program teaches parents to be good examples of coping with anxiety, coach children to become more emotionally resilient and develop your own toolbox of strategies. You can choose how to best support your child as they learn to manage their anxiety more effectively. Fear-Less Triple P is part of the comprehensive parenting system, the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program.

What can I expect from this program?

Fear-Less Triple P encourages you to use practical strategies with all family members, not just the
child who seems especially anxious. In this way, the Fear-Less Triple P program helps the whole
family. The program is based on research and experiences working with the families of children
and teenagers with anxiety for more than 30 years.

Why is it called Fear-Less?

It’s called “Fear-Less” (not fearless) because its not possible (or useful) to completely eliminate
fear from our lives. Sometimes fear is reasonable and helps keep us safe. What we can do is
reduce unnecessary fear and worry. This means learning to cope with anxious feelings and
becoming more confident. This is true whether we’re adults, teenagers or children.
