Telling Our Stories: Jewish Heritage Month

Collingwood-Museum

Collingwood, ON – In 2018 the federal government introduced the Jewish Heritage Month Act, designating the month of May as a time to recognize the important contributions that Jewish Canadians have made to Canada’s social, economic, political, and cultural fabric. Through the initiative of the Southern Georgian Bay Jewish Community is fortunate to have two Jewish Heritage Month events relaunching the Town of Collingwood ‘Telling our Stories’ initiative. Collectively, these events focus on sharing experiences and contributions of Jewish people in Canada.

Visit the Collingwood Museum from June 1 to June 14 and explore the Canadian Jewish Experience, a special exhibit curated as part of the Canada 150 initiative which has travelled across Canada telling the story of the Jewish community’s history.

The exhibit includes 9 panels, including eight thematic sections exploring, through photos and text, Jewish trailblazers in arts and culture, public service, sports, military, human rights, commerce, and more. To learn more, visit the CJE website.

On Friday, June 7th Holocaust Survivor Renate Krakauer will speak at the Simcoe Street Theatre at 11:00 a.m. sharing her family’s story to build awareness and understanding of our shared history. To reserve a seat please contact Rashell Feldman at [email protected].

Jewish Heritage Month was established with an understanding of the importance of building awareness and providing opportunities for education. Education is the key to dismantling discriminatory beliefs and working collectively to eliminate antisemitism.

About the South Georgian Bay Jewish Community (SGSBJC)

In the Southern Georgian Bay region, there are more than 350 Jewish members of our community. Recognizing a growing need, Rashell and Dr. Michael Feldman established the South Georgian Bay Jewish Community to offer additional supports after the events on October 7th and the increase in antisemitism globally. Since unfolding what has been an amazing outpouring of interest, support, and involvement by so many. An executive committee of dedicated volunteers has been formed to develop opportunities to celebrate, connect, and educate. The Town of Collingwood and the Town of Wasaga Beach have recently adopted the IHRA’s definition of antisemitism. To learn more, visit the SGBJC website.

A Story of Determination and Hope

In the vibrant and bustling Zócalo square of Mexico City, thousands of citizens gathered to witness the historic inauguration of their new president, Claudia Sheinbaum. The atmosphere was alive with excitement and hope for the future. For Claudia, this day marked the culmination of years of dedication and unwavering commitment to her country.

Claudia Sheinbaum’s path to the presidency began in the colorful neighborhoods of Mexico City. Born and raised in the capital, Claudia was deeply influenced by her parents, who were both academics and activists. They instilled in her a passion for education and social justice. After earning a degree in physics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) [^1], Claudia pursued a career that combined her scientific acumen with her desire to effect positive change.

She emerged as a prominent figure in environmental and urban development issues, becoming a key contributor to Mexico City’s sustainability initiatives. Her work as the city’s Environment Secretary showcased her ability to implement large-scale projects with tangible benefits, such as the transformation of the capital’s public transportation system [^2].

In 2018, Claudia broke barriers by becoming the first woman elected as the head of government of Mexico City [^3]. Her tenure was marked by a focus on reducing inequality, improving public safety, and enhancing the city’s infrastructure. Her pragmatic approach and dedication to the well-being of her constituents earned her widespread acclaim and set the stage for her presidential campaign.

During her presidential campaign, Claudia promised to bring the same level of dedication and effective governance to the national stage. Her platform centered around sustainable development, social equality, and tackling corruption. Her vision resonated with millions of citizens who were eager for a leader who could bring about meaningful change.

On the day of Claudia’s inauguration as the President of Mexico, the crowd in Zócalo square erupted in cheers as she took the stage. The sun shone brightly, symbolizing the dawn of a new era. Claudia began her speech with a heartfelt message:

“Today, we embark on a journey together—a journey towards a Mexico that embraces its potential and cares for all its people. We will prioritize sustainable development, ensuring that our progress does not come at the expense of our environment. We will strive for social equality, so that every citizen has the opportunity to thrive. We will combat corruption, because trust in our institutions is fundamental to our democracy.”

The audience responded with thunderous applause, their optimism and faith in their new president palpable. Claudia spoke with conviction about the importance of unity and shared responsibility in building a better Mexico. She emphasized that the success of her administration would rely on the participation and cooperation of all citizens.

In her first months in office, President Sheinbaum launched comprehensive initiatives focused on education, healthcare, and environmental protection [^4]. Her administration worked to ensure that marginalized communities received equitable resources and attention. Her efforts to enhance transparency and reduce corruption began to restore the public’s confidence in the government.

Through tireless work and a commitment to her values, Claudia Sheinbaum started to transform Mexico. Schools were renovated, healthcare services improved, and sustainable practices were integrated into national policies. The economy began to show signs of revitalization as local businesses thrived under new support programs.

As the years passed, Claudia’s leadership demonstrated that progress and compassion could coexist. Her policies fostered a sense of national pride and unity, and her story became a beacon of inspiration for countless others aspiring to make a difference.

President Claudia Sheinbaum’s legacy was cemented as a leader who brought hope and transformation to Mexico. Her journey from a dedicated activist to the highest office in the land illustrated the power of perseverance and the impact of true leadership.

Holy Moley shares: How TikTok Could Decide the 2024 American Election

0

2024 American Election

As the 2024 election cycle heats up, the influence of TikTok on political campaigning is becoming increasingly apparent.

With over a billion active users, TikTok’s reach spans a wide array of demographics, making it a critical tool for political communication. Campaigns are capitalizing on the platform’s sophisticated algorithm to target specific voter segments with tailored content. This precision allows political messages to resonate more deeply with various constituencies, ensuring that efforts to mobilize and inform voters are both efficient and effective.

TikTok’s potential to shape the election is also tied to its unique capacity for creating viral content. Political ads, candidate speeches, and grassroots activist videos can quickly accumulate views, likes, and shares, propelling them into widespread circulation. This dynamic can elevate lesser-known candidates and bring critical issues to the forefront, sometimes challenging the narrative set by mainstream media. The app’s interactive features, such as duets and stitches, enable users to engage directly with political content, fostering a participatory environment where voters can voice their opinions and spark discussions.

The platform’s growing role in political discourse raises important considerations. The spread of misinformation and the potential for biased content moderation are significant challenges that need addressing. TikTok’s policies on political advertising, transparency, and fact-checking will be crucial in maintaining a fair and credible election process. Ensuring these mechanisms are robust can help mitigate the risk of misinformation swaying voter opinions and ensure that the platform promotes a healthy democratic dialogue.

For further exploration of social media’s impact on elections, check out this detailed analysis by Pew Research. Additionally, for a more focused look at how TikTok is shaping political campaigns, this article by The New York Times provides insightful perspectives. These resources underscore the evolving role of digital platforms in political strategy and voter engagement, highlighting the transformative potential of TikTok in the upcoming 2024 election.

Trump Verdict Reaction: Donald Trump found guilty in hush money trial | Colin Cowherd Podcast

Colin Cowherd reacts to the verdict of former U.S. President Donald Trump being found guilty in a hush money trial.

In response to the verdict on former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, there have been mixed reactions across the political spectrum. Supporters of Trump argue that the acquittal demonstrates that the charges against him were baseless and politically motivated. They view it as a victory for Trump and a validation of his leadership.

On the other hand, opponents of Trump express disappointment, claiming that the Senate missed an opportunity to hold him accountable for his actions. Many critics of Trump believe that the acquittal sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the principles of justice and accountability in government. The aftermath of the trial has further deepened the political divide in the United States, with both sides interpreting the verdict to fit their own narratives.

Collingwood is ‘On the Move’: Celebrating Bike Month

Collingwood, ON – Collingwood residents are encouraged to get ‘On the Move’ by adding active transportation to their daily routine this June in celebration of Bike Month!

Whether you walk or wheel, active transportation improves personal and community health by increasing physical activity and socializing, while also reducing the negative environmental impacts of vehicular traffic.

June is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors, ride a bike, walk, or use other forms of active transportation to get you to where you need to go.

Shifting your routine, even if it is one day a week, is a great start. The Town encourages you to participate in Walk and Wheel Wednesdays throughout the month of June, starting Wednesday, June 5. All you have to do is add a walk or wheel to your day.

Launch into Bike Month, on June 1 at Trail Tunes, an award-winning, regional event connecting communities by trail and by song. Explore over 100kms of trails and enjoy live music at the trailheads of Wasaga Beach, Clearview and Collingwood. Visit the Shipyards Amphitheatre, 2 North Maple Street from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 pm on Saturday, June 1.

Also on Saturday, June 1, chat with volunteers from the Trails & Active Transportation Committee and members of Council at the Farmer’s Market (corner of Pine & Second Streets). Be safe, be seen; visit the Town’s booth and get your free Town of Collingwood bike light (while supplies last)!

NEW! The Town has launched three videos on its YouTube Channel to help educate everyone on cycling rules and etiquette on Collingwood bike lanes and trails, the new sharrows on Maple Street, and trail etiquette for all users.  The videos will highlight Collingwood’s 60+ kilometers of recreational trails for cyclists, walkers, joggers, and other modes of active transportation.

Learning how to cycle safely is important. Cyclists under 18 must wear an approved bicycle helmet including children riding in a child carrier, or a bicycle trailer. A helmet is strongly recommended for anyone 18 or over. Visit Ontario.ca for more cycling safety tips.

Drivers play a critical role in keeping cyclists safe. Bicycles in the roadway are considered vehicles. Drivers must watch for cyclists, slow down, and give them space. When passing a cyclist, drivers are required by the Highway Traffic Act to maintain a minimum distance of one metre between their vehicle and the cyclist. Visit sharetheroad.ca for more information on how drivers can co-exist safely with cyclists.

The expansion of safe cycling routes, bike parking shelters, new crosswalks, and water bottle refill stations are just some examples of how Collingwood is working to support active transportation and alternative modes of travel in the community.

Ally Vitally | The Verdict: GUILTY of ALL 34 CHARGES

0

In the heart of Manhattan, the courtroom was packed with tension. The world watched as the jury returned with their verdict.

Donald J. Trump, former President of the United States, stood accused on 34 counts related to financial and electoral misconduct. After weeks of testimonies, cross-examinations, and heated debates, the moment of truth had arrived.

As the judge called for order, the jury foreman rose and began to read the verdict. One by one, the counts were addressed. “Guilty,” the foreman repeated, a solemn tone echoing through the silent courtroom. The gravity of the decision was palpable; Trump had been found guilty on all counts.

The charges ranged from tax fraud and obstruction of justice to campaign finance violations. The prosecution had presented a compelling case, detailing a web of deceit and manipulation that spanned years. They showcased how Trump had allegedly manipulated financial records, misled investigators, and violated campaign finance laws to maintain his business empire and political influence.

The defense, despite their vigorous efforts, failed to convince the jury of Trump’s innocence. Their arguments were dismantled by a mountain of evidence and persuasive witness testimonies.

Outside the courthouse, a crowd had gathered, a mix of supporters and detractors. News outlets broadcast the historic moment live, capturing the varied reactions from disbelief and outrage to relief and vindication. This verdict marked a significant moment in American history, symbolizing accountability and the rule of law.

Trump’s legal team immediately announced plans to appeal, vowing to continue the fight. However, the verdict stood as a monumental judgment against a figure who had once held the highest office in the land.

The Blue Mountains and Collingwood Kick Off Collaborative Multi-Use Recreation Feasibility Assessment

Collingwood, ON [30 May 2024] – The Town of The Blue Mountains and Town of Collingwood are excited to announce the launch of their Joint Multi-Use Recreation Feasibility Assessment (MURFA), awarding the consulting contract to Colliers Project Leaders.

The Joint Assessment will assess the current and future recreational facility needs of residents from both communities and will also explore integrating library services into a multi-use model, as has proven effective in several municipalities across the province.

As part of the Assessment, the consulting team from Colliers will create a community consultation plan, research best practices, and use planning and forecasting tools to estimate future recreation needs. The study is expected to take eight months to complete and will provide both Councils with the information required to decide whether to further progress plans that could lead to major community investments.

“This study fits very nicely into our regional approach philosophy and shows that both communities are open to thinking outside of the box to find the best solutions for our residents,” says Town of The Blue Mountains Mayor Andrea Matrosovs. “I look forward to seeing the findings of the study and encourage all residents to get engaged and participate wholeheartedly.”

“Many residents have expressed the need for multi-use recreational solutions, and we are a community that thrives on recreation and a healthy active lifestyle. I encourage residents to participate in consultation opportunities on this project ensuring a diverse range of voices are heard,” echoes Collingwood Mayor Yvonne Hamlin.

Robust engagement with residents, community groups, local and provincial sports organizations, third-party recreation providers, and community space users is pivotal to gather the most complete data possible. Subscribe to the project pages below to be notified about confirmed public engagement opportunities, and to stay informed of the project background, objectives, progress, and outcomes.

Background

Funding for individual feasibility studies was recommended through both Town of Collingwood’s 2019 PRC Master Plan and The Blue Mountains’ 2021 Leisure Activities Plan. The municipalities have both received Council approval and budget to work on a joint feasibility study to investigate a regional approach. Library Boards in Collingwood and The Blue Mountains also provided direction to review expansion and relocation feasibility, and with Council support, it was agreed to investigate in conjunction with the Joint Assessment as a measure of efficiency and timing opportunity.

Awarded through the Kinetic Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) platform, Colliers Project Leaders is Canada’s largest real estate advisory and project management company.
