Funds will support the development of a new centre of community, featuring youth transitional housing and a multicultural space

Midhurst/February 3, 2025 – The County of Simcoe and the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka are proud to announce the approval of a $5 million capital contribution from the County to support the development of a new centre of community to serve Barrie and surrounding area. The funding is dedicated to the creation of transitional housing for youth and a multicultural space in partnership with the Simcoe County Local Immigration Partnership. These critical services aim to address the growing needs of the Barrie community and surrounding areas by providing essential resources for youth in transition and fostering cultural inclusion.

“County Council is committed to Building Up homes, lives, and hope across the region through targeted and fiscally responsible investments in our community,” said Warden Basil Clarke, on behalf of the County of Simcoe. “That is why, when the Y came to us with a plan to provide much needed and critical transitional housing for youth, combined with a multicultural space where the community can celebrate our region’s diversity for years to come, Council knew this was an investment that our residents would be proud to support.”

Key aspects of the project include:

  • Transitional Housing for Youth: Addressing the critical need for temporary housing solutions to help youth experiencing homelessness transition to begin to live more independently.
  • Multicultural Space: A space designed to support and celebrate the diversity of Simcoe County’s growing population, offering multicultural programs and services.

This investment allows the YMCA to continue shining a light on community impact by delivering services that spark transformation, support vulnerable groups, and promote belonging. The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka extends its sincere thanks to Basil Clarke, County of Simcoe Warden and County staff for their support and partnership. This funding is pivotal in bringing the vision of the new multi-use centre of community to life, ensuring that the YMCA can continue to shine and serve the residents of Barrie and the surrounding communities.

“We are deeply grateful to the County of Simcoe for recognizing the importance of this project and approving this critical funding,” said Jill Tettmann, President and CEO of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka. “This investment will allow us to serve youth in need, support cultural integration, and create a hub for the entire community. Together, we are building vibrant and connected communities where everyone belongs.”

The County of Simcoe’s contribution demonstrates a strong commitment to Building Up homes, health, hope and social services across the region through community development and support for vital social services. This centre of community will be a beacon for the Barrie area, helping individuals and families thrive.
