Town of Collingwood Commemorates National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day

Sharing is SO MUCH APPRECIATED!

Collingwood, ON [03 June 2025] – The Town of Collingwood is proud to honour National Indigenous History Month this June, recognizing the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Beginning June 2, flags representing the Inuit, First Nations, and Métis peoples, alongside the flags of the Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and Anishinaabe, will be displayed in the windows of Town Hall.

Community members are encouraged to explore the Awen’ & Reconciliation web page to deepen their understanding of our shared history.

As part of this month’s celebrations, residents and visitors alike are invited to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21 with the official opening of Noojimo Mitigwaaki (Noe-jih-moh Mih-tig-waw-kih), a new installation at Harbourview Park (1 Water Street).

Noojimo Mitigwaaki is a walk of spirit, awareness, understanding, and reconciliation. The pathway features seven designated signs, each integrating Indigenous images, teachings, and life reflections. Explore the medicine garden, located at the entrance of the path, showcasing the sacred medicines of each direction of the medicine wheel. More information on each of the signs is available on the Awen’ & Reconciliation web page.

The official opening ceremony will be enriched with song, dancing, and teachings, welcoming all to participate in this meaningful event.

To conclude the day, the Town invites everyone to the Shipyards Amphitheatre (2 North Maple Street) for a free live concert featuring acclaimed Indigenous artists:

🎶

6:00 p.m. – Red N Blue, blending blues, country, rock, and folk to share inspirational stories of the land and its people.

🎤

6:45 p.m. – Oolayou Duo, captivating audiences with traditional throat singing.

🎸

7:00 p.m. – Burnstick, delivering powerful vocal harmonies that inspire reflection and connection.

Join us in celebrating the vibrant cultures, histories, and voices of Indigenous Peoples.
