I am honoured to have Ziraldo Estate Winery VQA Icewine featured on Luftansa Airlines, the national airline of Germany, which is the country where Icewine was born in the 17th century.
I was introduced to the buyer for Luftansa Airlines at their Trade Tasting in Paris that occurs every two years Jean Luc Soubie, the owner of Valade & Transandine, our import agency in France, and owner of Chateau de Lisennes on Bordeaux’s Right Bank.
Canadian Icewine has become a globally recognized luxury wine. In 1983 Karl Kaiser, my partner and co-founder of Inniskillin Wines, felt that the Canadian winters were ideally suited to harvesting grapes “naturally frozen on the vines” to make a rich, concentrated specialty wine. It was a tradition that he had learned in his native Austria. The origins of ice wine dates back to the 17th century in Germany. There are several legends and the one I often referred to is the story of the Baron that came back from a war to visit his family for Christmas. And when he was driving into the estate, he discovered the peasants had not harvested the grapes. When he asked him why not, they said, “We were not instructed to do so, Sir”. The Baron then instructed them to pick the frozen grapes, and the result became a Christmas gifting offering.
The 2022 Ziraldo Vidal Icewine has vibrant acidity that keeps it fresh rather than cloying, which is a result of the cool climate viticulture Niagara region. This creates the perfect equilibrium between sweetness and acidity. The 2022 should age very well. Stored properly between 10C – 13C, it can continue to develop complexity for 10 – 20 years or more, gaining notes of caramel, dried apricot, marmalade, and honey while retaining freshness.
