๐บ๐ธโค๏ธ๐จ๐ฆ COMMON GROUND by Kevin Hamlin Music | VIDEO
A note from a Canadian neighbour.
For the last several years, watching from across the border, Iโve watched a country I have cared about for forty years spend more and more of itself on what divides it, and less and less on what holds it together. What I feel watching it goes deeper than concern. It is a sadness. And I have written a song โ not about this sadness I feel, but about a country I do care about. Itโs a song by a Canadian who simply cared enough to write it.
This is not a Canadian telling Americans what to do. This is a Canadian saying โI careโ. I wanted to help, not by pushing back, but by reaching across.
What twenty-nine years of high school band rooms taught me about a country
For twenty-nine years I stood in front of thousands of teenagers who showed up not yet knowing each other, not yet trusting each other, not yet sounding like anything. A band room is where they learn. They learn that you cannot play your own part louder to fix the band โ you have to listen to the people around you and find your place inside the sound they are already making. They learn about the kid two chairs down, who is nothing like you, but is part of the reason the chord works. Over time, with patience and rehearsal, thousands of those students gave their heart and soul to make our program everything we dared to dream it could be, by finding their own common ground, and within that, their own united purpose. That is what a band is. It is also, on its better days, what a country is.
One voice becomes many. Many voices become one.
