County recognizes the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination during #ITSTARTS month

    Sharing is SO MUCH APPRECIATED!

Midhurst/March 21, 2025 – Each year during ITSTARTS month, the County of Simcoe recognizes and observes the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD). Observed annually on March 21st, IDERD serves to raise awareness about, and positively address, injustices and prejudices unfortunately still taking place around the world.

The County of Simcoe joins with governments from all levels across Canada to continue working toward a stronger, healthier Canada that is welcoming to people regardless of race, ethnic origin, skin colour, language, religion, or other Ontario Human Rights protected grounds. Together, we know that while much progress has been made, there is still more work to be done.

The Government of Canada has shared tips on its website for Canadians to join in the fight against racism, discrimination, and xenophobia in Canada. They suggest that Canadians can:

    1. Educate themselves and others about the history and ongoing issues of racism, discrimination, and xenophobia in Canada to increase awareness and understanding of these issues. Check out this podcast to learn how cognitive biases can perpetuate systemic racism: Eh Sayers Season 2, Episode 1 – Created Equal.
    2. Speak out against racism, discrimination, and xenophobia when you encounter it. This can be done by calling out racist or discriminatory behavior and language, and by standing in solidarity with those who are being targeted.
    3. Support Indigenous peoples and racialized and religious minority communities by listening to and amplifying their voices, and by supporting organizations and initiatives that work towards racial equality.
    4. Encourage anti-racism and racial equality, in all areas of life, including in the workplace, schools, and communities, and promote policies and initiatives that support these values.

The website also includes social media images, virtual backgrounds for video conferencing, and more information on the history of racial discrimination in Canada.

    ITSTARTS with all of us!

The campaign runs every year during the month of March. Residents, businesses, and local organizations can get involved in the campaign by:

    1. Request cards from the Local Immigration Partnership ([email protected]). Multilingual digital copies are available for download on our webpage at simcoe.ca/ITSTARTS.
    2. Share your message on social media using the hashtag #ITSTARTS and tagging the County of Simcoe:
    • X / Twitter – @simcoecounty
    • Facebook – @CountyofSimcoe
    • Instagram – @countyofsimcoe
    • LinkedIn – @CountyofSimcoe

Posts may include campaign cards, #ITSTARTS selfie frames, or content related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. All posts promoting unified communities are welcome!

    1. Perform acts of inclusivity within your sphere of influence (i.e. book or film club, multicultural celebrations).
    2. Join the Simcoe County Diversity Hub for additional resources. Contact [email protected] for access.

About the Simcoe County Local Immigration Partnership

The Simcoe County Local Immigration Partnership (SCLIP) was established in 2011 and leads community-based planning intended to improve social and economic outcomes for immigrant residents. SCLIP is funded in-part by Immigration, Refugees, Citizenship Canada (IRCC). In 2023, the Simcoe County Local Immigration Partnership published a new Community Settlement Strategy with recommendations to support the development of welcoming communities.

Together, we’re building a more inclusive Simcoe County—one conversation at a time.
