How to Stay Your Own Person in a Relationship

Dear Gracelyn: How do I maintain my independence in a relationship?

    Cathy G. โ€“ Collingwood

    Dear Cathy,

Maintaining independence in a relationship is all about striking that sweet balance between โ€œweโ€™re a teamโ€ and โ€œIโ€™m still me, dammit.โ€ Think of it like a Wi-Fi signal: you want to stay in range to enjoy the connectionโ€”shared laughs, cozy nights, someone to split the pizza withโ€”but you donโ€™t want to be so glued to the router that you canโ€™t wander off and do your own thing.

Start with the basics: keep your own hobbies. If you love painting, gaming, or perfecting your sourdough starter, donโ€™t ditch it just because your partner isnโ€™t into it. Those solo passions are your oxygenโ€”neglect them, and youโ€™ll start feeling like a supporting character in someone elseโ€™s rom-com. Same goes for your friends. Theyโ€™re your crew, your sanity check, your โ€œletโ€™s grab a drink and ventโ€ lifeline. A partner who canโ€™t handle you having a social circle outside of them is a red flag, not a soulmate.

Then thereโ€™s the practical stuff. Maintain your own spaceโ€”literal or mental. Whether itโ€™s a corner of the house for your weird vinyl collection or just an hour a day where youโ€™re off-limits, carving out territory keeps you from merging into a single, indistinguishable blob of coupledom. And donโ€™t sleep on the small wins: keep your own Netflix queue. Nothing screams independence like refusing to compromise on watching The Great British Bake Off while theyโ€™re binging Narcos.

The trick is communicating this without turning it into a standoffโ€”let them know youโ€™re not dodging them, youโ€™re just nurturing you. Itโ€™s like telling a plant, โ€œI love you, but Iโ€™m not watering you 24/7 or weโ€™ll both drown.โ€ Done right, youโ€™ll have a relationship where youโ€™re together because you want to be, not because youโ€™ve forgotten how to function apart. Plus, itโ€™s way sexier to be with someone whoโ€™s got their own vibe going onโ€”dependency is so last season.

    Be Happy,

    Gracelyn
