(COLLINGWOOD, ON) – The Collingwood and The Blue Mountains Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding residents to remain vigilant against fraud-related crimes as warmer weather approaches.

Police often see an increase in reports of fraudulent home and property service scams during the spring and summer months. These scams can include door-to-door contractors offering services such as driveway paving, roofing, landscaping, or other repairs at unusually low prices.

The OPP encourages residents to take the time to do their due diligence before hiring any company to perform work on or around their home. Ensuring the legitimacy of a business can help prevent financial loss and unnecessary stress.

Things to look out for include:

  • Unsolicited offers from individuals going door-to-door
  • Requests for large upfront payments or cash-only deals
  • Pressure to make quick decisions or “limited-time” offers
  • Lack of written contracts or vague estimates
  • No proof of insurance, business registration, or references
  • Contractors who refuse to provide a physical business address or contact information

Tips to protect yourself:

  • Research the company online and check reviews
  • Verify the business is properly licensed and insured
  • Ask for references and follow up with previous customers
  • Get multiple written quotes before agreeing to any work
  • Never feel pressured to commit on the spot
  • Avoid paying the full amount upfront

If you believe you have been the victim of a fraud, contact your local police service. Fraud incidents can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
