When the railway came through Grey County in the 1870s, a parcel of land was sold to be made into a station, and Markdale was officially born.
As a crucial stop between Toronto and Owen Sound, the town flourished as a business hub. The town’s population ebbed and flowed over the following decades, until the founding of a factory that would keep Markdale on the map. Chapman’s Ice Cream was established in 1973 and has been a central employer in the town ever since. At its current crossroads, the people of Markdale know that in order to survive, the town needs to expand, but locals are divided on what the answers are.
