When the railway came through Grey County in the 1870s, a parcel of land was sold to be made into a station, and Markdale was officially born.

As a crucial stop between Toronto and Owen Sound, the town flourished as a business hub. The town’s population ebbed and flowed over the following decades, until the founding of a factory that would keep Markdale on the map. Chapman’s Ice Cream was established in 1973 and has been a central employer in the town ever since.
