The Blue Mountains Fire Department is recognizing Emergency Preparedness Week, taking place May 4 to 8, 2026, and reminding residents of the importance of being prepared for emergencies. This year’s theme, Prepared Together, encourages people to be better prepared to protect themselves and their households as the seasons change. Taking a few simple steps today can significantly reduce risks tomorrow.
How Residents can be #PreparedTogether for the changing seasons:
- Have a 72-hour kit ready for you and your family, including pets.
- Adjust seasonal items in your kit, such as rain gear and dry bags for the spring, and extra water and sunscreen for the summer.
- Stay informed by downloading the WeatherCAN app or monitoring weather.ga.ca for up-to-date alerts.
- Plan for power outages by considering essential needs, such as refrigerated medication or medical equipment, and ensuring backup options are in place.
- Test household smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. In Ontario, smoke and CO alarms are required by law on every level of your home and near each sleeping area.
Throughout Emergency Preparedness Week, members of the public are invited to visit Town Hall, where an Emergency Preparedness display will be set up in the atrium. The display will feature a sample 72-hour emergency kit along with resources and information to help residents better understand how to prepare their households.
When we are #PreparedTogether, we all do our part in helping to #ProtectOntario.About Emergency Preparedness Week
