🤣 Jonathan Winters Was Almost Impossible To Interview — That’s Why It Worked So Well

Jonathan Winters could turn one simple question into four minutes of unforgettable television.

Johnny Carson knew it. David Letterman knew it too — but Johnny Carson and David Letterman handled Jonathan Winters in completely opposite ways. Carson would ask one small question, lean back, and wait. Letterman would name a character and order it like a song from a jukebox. And somehow, both methods worked.

In this video, we put rare Jonathan Winters appearances from The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson beside his unforgettable moments with David Letterman to see what happened when one of television’s greatest improvisers was given two completely different kinds of freedom. A nut pulled from his pocket. A gas station attendant summoned on command. Wally and his Zenith television. Three characters from three different countries. A studio chair collapsing underneath him. And finally, a quiet moment where Jonathan Winters puts on his reading glasses and reveals something completely different from the comedian audiences thought they knew.

Johnny Carson gave Winters silence. David Letterman gave him instructions. Jonathan Winters turned both into comedy. But which host understood him better? Watch to the end and tell us below: Carson or Letterman?
