For years, Iranian authorities have recklessly put the life of human rights defender Narges Mohammadi at risk by subjecting her to torture or other ill-treatment through the deliberate denial of timely and adequate specialized healthcare.

TAKE ACTION

.

Narges had a heart attack on March 24, 2026, in Zanjan prison, Zanjan province. She has suffered from chest pain, blood pressure fluctuations, severe headaches, dizziness, nausea and double vision since her unjust imprisonment in December 2025. On May 10, 2026, Narges was released on bail for one month to receive medical treatment at a hospital in Tehran. Just over a week later she was reportedly discharged from the intensive care unit and sent home.

A return to Zanjan prison, where the hospital lacks the specialized care and follow-up she needs, would once again put her health at grave risk.

Quotes

“Her recovery demands strict medical supervision outside prison walls. Returning her to detention is a death sentence.”

Kiana Rahmani

Narges Mohammadi’s daughter

Narges Mohammadi has been repeatedly targeted and imprisoned for her human rights work for nearly 25 years. Since May 2021, Iranian authorities have unjustly convicted and sentenced her to over 20 years in prison, 154 lashes and other sanctions in eight separate cases stemming from her peaceful human rights activism.

Following Narges’s most recent arrest on December 12, 2025, in Mashhad, Razavi Khorasan province, agents subjected her to torture or other ill-treatment, including severe beatings all over her body and head. She was then held in a Ministry of Intelligence detention centre in Mashhad until February 10, 2026, when authorities suddenly transferred her to Zanjan prison without prior notice to her family or lawyers.

On October 6, 2023. Narges Mohammadi was named the recipient of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all”.

Narges Mohammadi must not be returned to prison. Call on Iran to quash her sentences and release her unconditionally.

Human Rights in Iran: Further Background

People in Iran, including prisoners, have been trapped between unlawful US and Israeli attacks and deadly domestic repression. Between February 28 and April 7, 2026, the USA and Israel carried out tens of thousands of air strikes on targets across Iran causing grave civilian harm. During the attacks, prisoners’ families and human rights defenders reported to Amnesty International that explosions took place in a number of prisons and facilities holding prisoners, including near Zanjan prison. Both during the attacks and since the fragile ceasefire announced on April 7, 2026, prisoners’ families and human rights defenders have also reported shortages of food, potable water and sanitation products inside prisons. These attacks began while people in Iran were still reeling from the unprecedented massacres of thousands of protesters and bystanders during the January 2026 uprising. In this context, the risks of atrocity crimes against people in Iran have multiplied, perpetrated by the authorities inside the country and from external attacks by US and Israeli forces.
