Sharing is SO MUCH APPRECIATED!

(COLLINGWOOD, ON) – Members of the Collingwood Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges after a driver failed to stop for police. 

On Monday, April 27, 2026, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation near Highway 26. The driver failed to stop for officers twice, colliding with a police cruiser in his second attempt to evade police. Officers successfully deployed a tire deflation device, after which the driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) assisted with the investigation and the driver was located the following day and arrested.

On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Mathew JANES, a 32-year-old from The Blue Mountains, was charged with:

·      Dangerous operation

·      Flight from a peace officer

·      Failure to stop after an accident

·      Fail to comply with a probation order

·      Take motor vehicle without consent

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound at a later date.

The Collingwood Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police remain committed to community safety through proactive traffic enforcement. The OPP reminds drivers that failing to stop for police or other emergency services puts the public, first responders and drivers at serious risk. Motorists are required by law to pull over safely to the right when directed by emergency vehicles.
