ONE PERSON DECEASED FOLLOWING CANOE INCIDENT ON STEWART LAKE

(GEORGIAN BAY TOWNSHIP, ON) – Members of the Bracebridge Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a fatal canoe incident that occurred on Stewart Lake in Georgian Bay Township.
On Saturday, August 8, 2026, shortly after 8:00 p.m., Bracebridge OPP responded to a report of a capsized canoe on Stewart Lake. Two individuals were canoeing when their canoe overturned approximately 40 feet from shore.
One occupant was rescued by a passing boater. The other went underwater and did not resurface.
Members of the Bracebridge OPP, Muskoka Lakes Fire Department and other emergency responders attended the scene and conducted search efforts. The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) was engaged to assist in the search.
On Sunday, August 9, 2026, the missing individual, a 31-year-old of Mississauga, was located deceased.
The investigation, conducted in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, remains ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Bracebridge OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
The OPP reminds all boaters and paddlers to make water safety a priority by wearing a properly fitted lifejacket or personal flotation device (PFD), checking weather conditions before heading out, and ensuring all required safety equipment is readily available.
