Collingwood, ON [25 May 2026] – The Town of Collingwood is moving forward with the next phase of planning and design for 84 Hurontario Street, an active interim public space located in the heart of downtown Collingwood.

Acquired by the Town in 2023, the property was preserved for public use following Council’s decision to purchase the site. Since then, the space has supported community use, seasonal activations, and small-scale programming while serving as a temporary public gathering space.

The Town is now working with Envision Tatham to explore opportunities to formalize the site as a permanent public open space that supports downtown activity, programming, and everyday community use.

“84 Hurontario Street has quickly become an active and recognizable community space in our downtown,” said Mayor Yvonne Hamlin. “This next phase will help guide how the space can continue to serve residents, businesses, and visitors over the long term.”

Over the past two years, interim use of the site has helped inform how the space functions operationally and how it may evolve in the future. Current site features include seating areas, planters, pedestrian pathways, bike parking, and the large-scale “Postcard Mural” installed by the Downtown Collingwood BIA through federal grant support.

The project will move through four key stages: stakeholder engagement, visioning, design, and construction documentation. Design objectives will be informed through stakeholder engagement, operational experience gained through the site’s interim use and feedback gathered during public presentation opportunities.

As part of the process, the public will have an opportunity to view proposed concept designs and share feedback during a public presentation at the Downtown Farmers’ Market on August 22, 2026. Following the Farmers’ Market, the designs will be shared on the project page for further review and feedback.

Project timeline highlights include:

  • Spring 2026: Stakeholder engagement and background research
  • Late Spring to Summer 2026: Concept design development
  • Summer 2026: Public presentation at the Downtown Farmers’ Market
  • Fall 2026: Construction documentation

Future phases, including tendering and construction, remain subject to future budget approval. Construction is anticipated in 2027 pending Council approval.
