✅ TRAFFIC STOP SERVES AS REMINDER OF ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE AND E-BIKE LAWS

(COLLINGWOOD, ON) – Members of the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding the public about the laws surrounding electric motorcycles and e-bikes following a recent traffic stop involving two youth operators.
On July 18, 2026, officers conducted a traffic stop in the area of Grey Road 19 and Sixth Street after observing two off-road electric motorcycles being operated without licence plates. During the investigation, officers determined that both operators were 15 years old.
The investigation identified several alleged offences under the Highway Traffic Act and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act:
· Fail to have driver’s licence
· Fail to have licence plate
· Fail to have permit
· Fail to have insurance
The owners of the electric motorcycles may also face charges related to permitting the operation of a motor vehicle by an unlicensed person, failing to have a valid permit and licence plate, and failing to maintain insurance.
If convicted of any of the above charges, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) will generate a driver’s licence number for the youth operators. Any resulting convictions could become part of their future driving record and will be associated with a driver’s licence obtained later in life.
The OPP is reminding the public that electric-powered motorcycles and dirt bikes are treated the same as their gas-powered counterparts under Ontario law. They are considered motor vehicles and must comply with the requirements of the Highway Traffic Act, Off-Road Vehicles Act, and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, including licensing, registration, permit, and insurance requirements, where applicable
The OPP reminds parents, guardians, and youth that individuals under 16 years of age are prohibited from operating powered or power-assisted bicycles, motorcycles, dirt bikes, or e-bikes on streets, roadways, sidewalks, or the Town’s trail system.
