๐ฏ OPP ADDRESSES ONGOING CONCERNS ABOUT YOUTH BEHAVIOUR IN THE COMMUNITY

(WASAGA BEACH, ON) โย The Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) continues to receive complaints regarding youths engaging in behaviour that is damaging property, creating traffic hazards, and, in some cases, involves the use of dangerous items as weapons.
Concerns include loitering around businesses after hours and the misuse of bear spray, flares, and fireworks. When used in a manner that is intended to cause harm or poses a risk to public safety, these items may be considered weapons under the Criminal Code of Canada.
The OPP is reminding youth and their parents that not complying with police directions and the use of these items as weapons are serious offences. In certain circumstances, youth who deliberately engage in these behaviours may face criminal charges in addition to charges under provincial legislation. Criminal charges can carry significant consequences and may have lasting impacts on a young personโs future.
The OPP is urging parents and guardians to take an active role in ensuring youth understand the consequences of their actions. Parents should know where their children are, who they are spending time with, how they are conducting themselves, and what items they may be carrying or have access to.
Conversations today about respecting others, private property, local businesses, and complying with police directions can help prevent injuries, charges, and serious consequences tomorrow.
The Huronia West OPP will continue to investigate complaints involving youths in the community and will take enforcement action where appropriate.
