In the summer of 2021 the Dixie Fire burned close to a million acres of Northern California.
FIRELINE puts you inside it, alongside three firefighters from the Cal Fire Lassen-Modoc Unit through nearly two straight days on the line.
Director Tylor Norwood embedded with crews rolling into Janesville and Susanville as walls of flame two hundred feet high moved on the towns. He also got inside incident command, where the people running the response describe a job that has become a matter of triage: too many fires, not enough crews, and impossible decisions about which communities get defended.
The result is a portrait of a system stretched past its limits and of the people who keep showing up anyway. Nine out of ten wildfires are started by human beings. The men and women in this film are the ones who go meet them.
Featuring California Office of Emergency Services chief Mark Ghilarducci, former state fire chief Kim Zagaris, Governor Gavin Newsom, and firefighters Justin Scott, Travis Lee, and Scott Hazleton.
