HURONIA WEST OPP INCREASING SCHOOL ZONE ENFORCEMENT AS STUDENTS RETURN TO CLASS

(WASAGA BEACH, ON) – As students return to school next week, members of the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be conducting targeted traffic enforcement in and around schools throughout the detachment area to help keep children safe.
With increased pedestrian, cyclist, and school bus traffic expected during the morning and afternoon commute periods, officers will be focusing enforcement efforts on behaviours that place students at risk, including speeding, distracted driving, school bus stop-arm violations, failure to yield to pedestrians, and other unsafe driving practices.
Drivers can expect to see an increased police presence in school zones and community safety zones as students return to classrooms across the region.
The Huronia West OPP is asking all road users to do their part to keep children safe by:
- Obeying posted speed limits, particularly in school safety zones and community safety zones.
- Remaining alert for children who may enter roadways unexpectedly.
- Watching for crossing guards and pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
- Sharing the road safely with cyclists travelling to and from school.
- Stopping for school buses when their overhead red lights are flashing and stop arm is activated.
- Exercising caution around school bus stops where children may be gathering or crossing the roadway.
Children can be unpredictable and may not always recognize traffic hazards. A moment of distraction or impatience behind the wheel can have serious consequences.
Throughout September, Huronia West OPP officers will continue proactive enforcement and community safety initiatives aimed at reducing collisions and ensuring students arrive at and return home from school safely.
